Suite* is a collaboration between La Caja and LEA, two spaces committed to contemporary creation that come together to promote groundbreaking site-specific projects. These projects are carried out by selected LEA artists and exhibited in a very unique space within La Caja, located on Fernando VI Street.
Belén García-Mendoza is a LEA artist who grew up in an apartment that served as both the entrance and exit to another country—an invisible axis between the United States and Spain. In her own words:
"In that house, we spoke, ate, and read in another language. We had the privilege of living in limbo—we didn't belong here or there. This duality is always with me, and in that room—which is a studio—I carry out the opposite of what happens in a common house, a home. Where one must be cleaned, the other tends to get dirty. One must be ordered, arranged—in the other, I break and reassemble. Everything happens under the same roof, but moving from one room to another involves actions, observations, and a radically different way of being.
How many homes are there within my home?
How much fantasy can reality tolerate, and vice versa?
With this question, I've sought out my own material—close, familiar, and everyday—to explore a fusion, or a landing. Thus, bread—the most common and enduring remnant of my home—becomes where I find one house inside another, a house for another house."
